Prof. Jun Zhang (1890-1977)

Medical educationist, pioneer of the human anatomy in modern China. Zhang received his early education in Japan, and went to America twice in 1921 and 1933 for further education. He had then been teaching in medical college in Jiangxi, Hunan and Shanghai province successively for nearly 60 years. He initiated and participated in the reestablishment of the Chinese Society for Anatomical Sciences(CSAS) in 1947, and was the 4th and 5th president of the council of CSAS(1956-1978); he also started the Acta Anatomica Sinica and The Anatomy Record, and was the editor-in-chief of the first anatomy textbook, Human Anatomy, in China. Prof. Zhang, who for many years had been engaged in the study of human anatomy, made achievements in histology and embryology, too; his commitment to the management of medical education had fostered a bunch of talents.

Prof. Zuogan Zhang(1906-1969)

Prof. Zhang graduated from Peking University in 1932, and then teached successively in Peking University, Cheeloo University, Peking Union Medical College and Guiyang Medical University. He received education in America in 1947-1949, and obtained his PhD there. Being one of the founders of histochemistry in China, Prof. Zhang served as the editor-in-chief of Acta Anatomica Sinica for quite a long time. He had been studying cytology and histology in Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences(CAMS) since 1950, and developed the first cryostat microtome in China, carried on researches on histochemistry and electron microscopy early, apart from which, his training class also helped develop a lot of brains for our country. Zhang mainly studied the histochemistry and ultrastructure changes in embryonic development, and he invented the first experimental animal models for mouse embryonic development. He was also the author of The Influence of Various Factors on the Development of Bone Structure and Causes of Deformity, The Progress of Cytology(1965), and the translator of Embryology(1956, I. G. Barth ).

Prof. Bingchang Zhang

Graduated from the biology department of Fu Jen Catholic University in 1946, Prof. Bingchang Zhang worked in the autopsy room of Peking Union Medical College(PUMC) since 1949; together with Prof. Jun Zhang, he accomplished researches on the analysis of Chinese children’s coronary artery types, the observation of Chinese adult skull and trauma repairation and regeneration, etc. In 1976 he was appointed to participate in the embalming and preservation of Chairman Mao’s body, and worked as the director of Chairman Mao Memorial Hall during 1977 to 1983; and was appointed head of the autopsy room of the Research Institute of PUMC in 1983. Prof. Zhang always impressed his students with his native English pronunciation, accurate anatomic operation and scope of knowledge. He set up the teaching model of “regional anatomy prior to systemic anatomy”, and authored the English version of practice guidance, which have long been in use even till now. In 1989, he was awarded the Outstanding Teacher both in Beijing and nationally.

Prof. Bingchang Zhang deceased after a heart attack at the age of 89, at 9:40 am on Nov. 11th, 2012. According to his wish, no memorial or farewell ceremony will be held; his body will be donated to PUMC in the purpose of teaching. Prof. Zhang's final lesson shall always be remebered.

Academician Shepu Xue

Born in 1917, Xue graduated and teached in the Former National Central University; he went to the United States for further education in 1947-1951 and received his PhD there; then he teached successively in Dalian Medical College, Harbin Medical College, Beijing Normal University, Central Health Research Institute and Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences, occupied in studies of cytology, embryology and reproductive biology. In 1991, Xue was elected member of Chinese academy of sciences. He was also the 8th and 9th president of the council of CSAS(1986-1994). He devoted himself to neurogenesis in his early years, and was successful in many fields such as induced differetiation of Layer and gonad, regulation of cell differentiation, regulation of germ cell differentiation and drug action mechanism, reversible regulation of the growth of tumor cells. While in recent years, molecular biological study on EDDF gene family has become his major focus. Xue was the chief editor of Embryology and Histologyl Basis(1960), Cytology Progress (1963), Atlas of Human Embryology(1965), Experimental Research on Male Contraceptive Gossypol(1983), Chinese Medical Encyclopedia: Histology and Embryology(1988) and Atlas of formation and development of Chinese Human Embryo (1992).

Prof. Xuancai Wan

Yi people, born on Sep, 1930 in Kunming, Yunan province. Wan joined the communist party in 1949, and graduated from Peking University Health Science Center after receiving a 7-year program medical training there. In the same year, he became a teaching assistant in the department of anatomy in PUMC. Wan had served as secretary in anatomy department, deputy secretary of the early departmental party branch, secretary of the falcuty of anatomy and director of anatomy/neurobiology teaching office in PUMC. He was appointed as chairman of CAMS/PUMC neuroscience project committee during 1986-1997, and established a doctoral program on human anatomy for PUMC in 1990. From 1995 to 2000, Wan was elected vice president for the 1st council of the Chinese neuroscience society, who at the same time presided a set of scientific projects on medical research supported by the Chinese Medical Board(CMB), the Natural Science Foundation of China(NSFC) along with the Ministry of Health research funds, and he then published hundreds of papers. Therefore, Wan was awarded “scientific research achievement” the first class by the Ministry of Health,  “State Science and Technology Advancement” the second class, Achievement of the 20th century” by the American Biography Institute (ABI). Prof. Wan’s research on multiple neuron markers in the 1990s won the State Science and Technology Progress Awards in 1999; and his invention on “CB coupling trophic factor by nerve transfer strategy” was authorized nationally and became an independent intellectual property of our country in 2005.

Prof. Shijuan Ye

Born on Oct 1936 in Suzhou, Jiangsu province. Prof. Ye graduated from Shandong University School of Medicine, and was inaugurated at the basic department in PUMC as a professor of histology and director of office. Ye had been worked on teaching and scientific research for more than 30 years, and achieved accomplishment on testicular sertoli cells and tissue ultrastructure, with dozens of paper published.

Prof. Weisan Ye

Prof. Weisan Ye received college education in the biology department of Peking University, and went to the United States twice as a visiting scholar. His research mainly focused on the genetics of germ cell, the mechanism and genetic effects of gossypol, hormones protection of testicular sperm formation from damage of chemotherapy, and contraceptive mechanism of male steroid hormone. Ye presided a number  of scientific projects funded by Natural Science Foundation of China(NSFC), Family Planning Commission and Ministry of Health, and was honored with both 7-5 and 8-5 third prizes of scientific breakthrough achievements, of “Advanced workers in scientific research of Family Planning ”.

Prof.Zenglu Xu

Prof.Zenglu Xu finished his college education in Peking Union Medical College in 1970, and obtained his master degree from the department of biology of Peking University in 1981. Xu is a professor, a doctoral supervisor, and the dean of human anatomy, histology and embryology department. His studies mainly focus on the biology of extracellular matrix, with a distinctive feature: he has studied the role of extracellular matrix for cell movement, adhesion and anchor in embryonic organ morphogenesis; discovered abnormal collagen in patients with marfan's syndrome, the distribution change of type I and III collagen in pulmonary artery of chronic hypoxia rats; and for the first time found SSCS as the EGF target cells, revealing the development law in extracellular matrix of testis, epididymis, and ovarian; he has also studied cell apoptosis and relevant gene regulation in mice testicular germ cell; did some research on the gene expression change of type I collagen in patients with osteoporosis; and created a model using rapid adhesion method to separate hair follicle stem cells, which made it for isolated cultivation.
